Video Messages
In a recent Workspace blog, Google announced the new video messaging feature in Google Chat and shared some practical use cases. This feature can be particularly useful for customer support and sales teams, allowing them to share video updates about new features or changes to accounts. Additionally, it serves as a great way to deliver company-wide announcements or act as a substitute for missed live meetings.
Similar to regular chat messages, video messages can be used in direct messages (DMs), group DMs, and spaces. Users can interact with these messages by quoting, replying, or reacting. All sent and received video messages will be stored in the Media section of the Shared tab, making it easy to find and refer back to important updates.
However, the video messaging feature does have some limitations, particularly regarding its availability. According to Google, users on ChromeOS, Linux, and Firefox cannot access the video messaging capability in Google Chat. While users can receive video messages across all platforms, they can only send them through the web version of Google Chat. Currently, the feature is not supported on mobile devices.

Voice Message Transcriptions
In a follow-up blog post, Google announced the introduction of transcription capabilities for voice messages in Google Chat. With this new feature, users will now see automatic transcriptions of voice messages on both web and mobile platforms. To view the transcript, users can simply tap the new “View Transcript” option located beneath the voice message. They also have the option to hide the transcripts if preferred.
Google explains that these voice message transcripts are formatted as readable text for screen readers, ensuring accessibility for all users. Additionally, the transcripts will automatically follow the device’s language settings, making it easier for users to read and understand the content in their preferred language.
