Railways to adopt technology similar to Apple: Understanding the LiDAR system and its potential to reduce train accidents

Indian Railways is set to introduce groundbreaking technology to prevent train collisions and detect track damage. This new initiative, inspired by the technology used in modern Apple devices, is known as LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). Using LiDAR will significantly enhance the safety of rail travel by detecting potential issues with the tracks and addressing them before accidents occur.
LiDAR technology is widely known for its precision in mapping and measuring distances. In Apple’s latest iPhones, it is used to create detailed 3D images and improve augmented reality experiences. Indian Railways plans to implement this technology to ensure the safety of its tracks by identifying fractures, faults, or any missing sections. Through its integration, not only will track defects be detected early, but any attempts at intentional damage can be caught promptly, preventing potential accidents.
This technology relies on a combination of sensors and laser beams to function. LiDAR emits laser pulses, which bounce back after hitting an object. By measuring the time taken for the return of these pulses, a detailed 3D model of the object—in this case, the railway tracks—is created. This real-time mapping allows for continuous monitoring and provides accurate data on the condition of the tracks. The sensors will be installed at strategic locations along railway lines and mounted on moving trains, ensuring comprehensive network surveillance.
Implementing LiDAR technology is expected to significantly reduce the number of train accidents. Reports suggest that Indian Railways plans to equip 1,000 trains with this system and cover around 1,500 km of track within the next two years. The complete installation and deployment of the LiDAR system are projected to be completed within 18 to 24 months. Track maintenance is often carried out manually, leading to delays in identifying and addressing damages. These delays can result in accidents, as issues are not detected in time. This automated, high-tech approach is expected to bridge that gap, making the entire process faster and more efficient.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has expressed confidence in the effectiveness of the LiDAR system, stating that it will ensure timely detection of defects and enhance the overall safety of rail operations. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Indian Railways to modernize its operations and incorporate cutting-edge technology. The Railways is also working on other high-tech safety measures, including installing AI-based CCTV cameras in train coaches and engines. These advanced cameras, costing Rs 75 lakh each, will improve trains’ security and monitoring. In total, the Railways is investing Rs 15,000 crore in these technological upgrades to bolster safety measures and enhance the overall travel experience for passengers.
With these advancements, real-time data on track conditions will be available, reducing the reliance on manual inspections and minimizing human error. The laser-based technology of LiDAR will precisely measure track distances and safety, providing a level of accuracy that traditional methods cannot match. By mapping the tracks and detecting any anomalies as they occur, railway officials can take quick action to rectify issues before they lead to significant problems.
Moreover, this proactive approach will prevent derailments and other potentially catastrophic incidents.
