Scooter Mechanic Wins Rs 25 Crore Lottery, But Will Not Take Home the Full Amount

Delhi News

In an inspiring story, Muhammad Altaf, a mechanic from Karnataka, has emerged as the grand prize winner of Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram Bumper Lottery 2024. With his winning ticket, TG 43422, purchased in Wayanad, he has secured a staggering Rs 25 crore. However, due to tax deductions, Altaf will receive only around Rs 13 crore. Despite this, he has grand plans for the windfall, including building a permanent home for himself and his family.

Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram Bumper Lottery 2024

The Winning Ticket

The Thiruvonam Bumper Lottery is popular in Kerala, and the latest draw took place in Thiruvananthapuram last Wednesday. Muhammad Altaf’s winning ticket was among the many sold for just Rs 500. Interestingly, this marks the second consecutive year that a non-resident of Kerala has won this significant lottery. The ticket that brought Altaf luck was sold at Sultan Bathery in Wayanad, and he hails from Pandavapuram in the Mandya district of Karnataka.

Nagaraj, who operates the NGR lottery outlet in Bathery, was the first to inform Altaf of his win. According to reports, the moment was surreal for the humble mechanic, who has been buying lottery tickets for the past 15 years. “It is all God’s grace,” Altaf remarked, expressing his joy and disbelief at the life-changing news.

Plans for the Windfall

Altaf lives with his wife and daughter in a rented house in Pandavapuram. With the lottery winnings, he is determined to realize one of his long-held dreams: building a permanent home for his family. “This money will be used to fulfill my biggest dream—to build a permanent house,” he said, highlighting the importance of stability for his loved ones.

In addition to constructing a home, Altaf may consider using a portion of his winnings for other investments or savings, although he has yet to elaborate on specific plans beyond the house.

Understanding the Tax Deductions

Despite the substantial amount he has won, lottery winnings in India are subject to taxation under the Income Tax Act. The income received from lotteries is classified as income, which means that Altaf will have to pay income tax on the winnings. The tax rate applied to lottery winnings depends on the individual’s total revenue, and the highest slab rate usually comes into play.

For instance, with a windfall like Rs 25 crore, the tax liability can be substantial, and winners often find themselves with significantly less than the advertised prize amount after deductions. In Altaf’s case, his take-home amount will be approximately Rs 13 crore after the tax deductions. This is a common scenario faced by many lottery winners across the country, leading to disappointment for some who may not fully understand the implications of their newfound wealth.

The Bigger Picture

Altaf’s win highlights the excitement of lottery draws and the harsh reality of taxation. While winning a lottery can be life-altering, it’s essential for winners to be prepared for the financial responsibilities that follow. Tax obligations can significantly affect how much money the winner can spend or invest.

As for Altaf, his story is one of perseverance and hope. After years of purchasing tickets without a win, his determination has finally paid off. He often travels to Wayanad to visit a childhood friend, and during these trips, he regularly buys lottery tickets, never expecting that one day, one of those tickets will change his life forever.

Conclusion

Muhammad Altaf‘s lottery victory reminds us of the power of hope and the dreams that often accompany the prospect of sudden wealth. While he may not receive the entire Rs 25 crore, the Rs 13 crore he will take home will allow him to build a brighter future for his family. In a world where dreams can sometimes feel unattainable, stories like Altaf’s offer a glimmer of possibility and remind us that persistence can lead to unexpected rewards.
